Translate this page Hello from your virtual guide!
I was born and raised in Melbourne, the daughter of European immigrants. My parents found a haven here after World War II. When my parents arrived in Melbourne to start their new lives, they were two of many European migrants and refugees, mainly from Italy and Greece. Back then, Melbourne's population strongly reflected its British heritage and sadly its aboriginal origins were totally unrecognised. During my life (and I will admit to being just past 40), people from many more countries have made Australia their home. In addition to Europeans, Melbourne now has strong Chinese, Vietnamese and Indian communities, as well as more recently arrived Iraqi, Afghani and Sudanese communities. All add to the vibrance and diversity of Melbourne life. To me, Melbourne has many facets. Because it is my home, it is comfortable, but I feel that this is also because I have everything I want here - fun, excitement, stability, peace, beauty, organisation, rough edges, colour, music, nature, food, fashion, history, sport. There is always something happening - festivals, exhibitions, entertainment - if you want it. At the same time, there is tranquility, nature and beauty when you seek it too. I am lucky to live just a short walk from beautiful suburban beaches. The people of Melbourne are generally friendly, casual and straight-talking. We laugh at life and we are a little cynical...down-to-earth in a cheerful way. I guess how you see Melburnians depends on your perspective. I'd love you to share your experiences of Melbourne with me...so I and other site visitors can learn from what you see. Drop me a line through my Contact Us page. I hope I have either inspired you to visit Melbourne on your trip down under, or confirmed a decision you already made. If you think there's anything I should add or change, please let me know through my Contact Us page. Hope I see you around... Jenny |
