Multicultural

Melbourne is also very multicultural, with people from more than 235 countries and regions living here. Nearly 31,000 Victorians are or Aboriginal. Almost a quarter of Victoria's (Melbourne is the state capital of Victoria) population was born overseas, speaking over 180 languages and dialects - 28% speak a language other than English. More than two-thirds of Melburnians only speak English, with Italian, Greek and Chinese the next most common languages spoken in the home.

Melbourne has the largest Greek population outside Greece. It also has a large Asian population including large communities of Vietnamese, Indian and Sri Lankan people.

Religion

Melbourne is a highly secular city but is also home to a range of religious faiths. The largest is Christian (64%). Smaller groups identify as Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Uniting Church, Buddhist, Muslim, Jewish and Hindu.
