Melbourne Trams

Melbourne has the biggest tram network in the world with 249 kilometres of tracks. Melbourne Trams will get you anywhere you need to go within central Melbourne and to the popular precincts on the fringes of the city. Trams are one the most unique aspects of Melbourne.

This tourist tram service is free and operates within central Melbourne. The tram runs in a loop passing major tourist attractions and links to other tram, train and bus services.

City Circle Trams run in both directions every 12 minutes between 10am and 6pm Sunday to Wednesday, and between 10am and 9pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Starting at Flinders Street, the tram travels to Harbour Esplanade, Latrobe Street, Victoria Street, Nicholson Street, Spring Street and back to Flinders Street. It travels in the reverse order too.

These vehicles have an attractive colonial appearance and are painted a deep red (see photo above). You can't miss them. City Circle trams are staffed by guides who will point out Melbourne attractions and landmarks to you.

melbourne tramsGeneral trams

Trams are a major part of Melbourne's public transport system, especially to the inner suburbs. All tram routes start (or end, depending on your viewpoint) in central Melbourne, so there are lots of trams in the city with various route numbers, and they run along numerous city streets. This means that it is VERY easy to get around central Melbourne and the inner suburbs by tram.

You can see a map of inner Melbourne trams routes here.

Tram stops

Many city tram stops provide digital timetables so you know how long you need to wait until the next tram. There are a number of accessible tram stop platforms, with more being built. These include ramps to assist the elderly, people with disabilities, users of mobility aides and parents with prams. The new platforms include tactile ground surface indicators, sheltered waiting areas and hearing augmentation.
