Melbourne weather

Melbourne weather is temperate. We don't have extremes of hot or cold temperatures, however, being in the Southern Hemisphere, Melbourne's seasons are opposite to North America, Europe and most of Asia. It is often hot on Christmas Day!

Melbourne has a reputation for unpredictable weather. Melburnians have a saying...that you get four seasons in one day. This is especially true during the Spring months of September to November, when rain, sun and wind are often all happening at once. What this means, however, is that you just need to be a little prepared...carry a jacket, cardigan or top with you or wear layers so that you can be comfortable whatever happens.

As I mentioned before, we don't get extremes of temperature. In winter, the lowest temperature might be 10°C but that's on one of the coldest days. In summer, we get a two or three 40°C days, but not many, and there is usually a cool change to follow. We like to be comfortable, so you'll find nearly all buildings have heating and air conditioning.

Summer	December-February	25°C	Most summer days are warm and sunny, with a southerly sea breeze in the afternoon. A hot period can see temperatures rise to 40°C but this is usually only lasts a day or two and is broken by a cool change.
Autumn	March-May	20°C	My favourite season because many days are mild and sunny with afternoon sea breezes. Clouds and showers increase towards May.
Winter	June-August	14°C	Melbourne has some of Australia's coldest weather, although for many travellers, this is nothing compared to home. Snow does not fall in the city, but outlying mountains have skiing.
Spring	September-November	20°C	At the start of Spring, you'll find lots of cloudy days with strong winds and surprisingly lots of periods of sunshine. By November, the weather is warming and more stable.
